Sunda ISLANDS
Day 1 Labuan Bajo
On arrival in Labuan Bajo you will be transferred to the hotel. A great start of the holiday: swim, snorkel or just laze on the beach. Labuan Bajo is famous for its amazing sunsets. In the afternoon a boat leaves to the Rinca Island. One of the few places where the magnificent Komodo Dragon lives. Stroll around the isle that offers astonishing views. Afterwards there will be some time left to go snorkelling at Bidadari Island, one of the beautiful islands that Sunda Islands are rich.
Day 2 Labuan Bajo - Mount Mbeliling
From Labuan Bajo the journey continues to the Roe village, at the foot of the Mbeliling Mountain. The Mbeliling Forest Reserve covers an area of 15.000 ha. Mount Mbeliling, the highest mountain in this area, is famous for its refreshing air and rich diversity of fauna and flora which makes it a perfect trekking destination. Today a 2-day trek starts, to fill up your lungs with fresh and clean air, while you can learn everything about their culture, customs and the carefully protected treasures of the Mbeliling Area. Learn about the endemic fauna and flora from the local rangers at the starting point, while being served traditional snacks - carefully prepared by the local women’s association. Start the trek at 600m above sea level in Roe village and hike in the cool mountain forest where you can discover an amazing range of tropical plants as well as some rare species of birds and other wildlife. A traditional lunch served in banana leaves will provide enough energy to climb the peak of the Mbeliling Mountain. Arriving at the top, 1239m above sea level, you enjoy a breath taking view over Flores - from Labuan Bajo to Komodo on the west to an impressive volcanic crater lake in the east. Take a rest and watch the sunset. Relax and dream under the stars, only separated from you by the roof of your tent.
Day 3 Danau Sano Nggoang
Wake up to the calls and the sounds of tropical birds and enjoy the sunrise from this scenic campsite. The porters serve hot coffee and a traditional breakfast with boiled bananas, corn, cassava and fresh fruit (seasonal). Continue hiking down to the astonishing Cunca Rami Waterfall, passing a village where you can experience the friendliness of local people, offering young coconut or fresh fruits. Take a swim and shower under the waterfall and relax, spotting different kinds of birds as well as huge honey combs in the rocks. After lunch you keep on walking along scenic paddy fields arriving in Werang village. From here the walk continues towards Flores’s largest lake – Sano Nggoang. This lake is one of the deepest crater lakes on earth. Sunsets and sunrises turn the local scenery into a mystical display of colours and light. A small traditional Catholic community has its home on the coast of the sulphur-rich waters. The villagers trust in the healing powers of the lake’s sulphuric yellow mud.
Day 4 Danau Sano Nggoang
Around Lake Sano Nggoang are hot springs up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit / 37 degrees Celsius with true natural value. The real attraction here is the water being hot enough to cook eggs and bananas in just 3 minutes. Lake Sano Nggoang is attractive as a bird watching location with a high population of birds in the region. Today you will hike around the lake to witness all this beauty yourself. The hike goes up to Savanna peak from where you can view the lake, Mbeliling forest and some small islands.
Day 5 Danau Sano Nggoang - Wea Liang
The trek ends at Werang by foot. Then the journey continues by jeep to Lembor, the rice shed of West Flores. After a local lunch the way goes along the south coast. You are rewarded with stunning views. This route is hardly ever made by tourists because it’s only accessible for jeep or truck. Finally a small village is reached from where the travel goes on by foot to Wea Liang. This is the centre of the Manggarai region in West Flores, known for its own culture (adat) and language. Meet the locals and experience their hospitality and friendliness while staying overnight in their homes.
Day 6 Wea Liang - Wea Rebo
Today a challenging climb to Wea Rebo starts, a village hidden in the mountains that is only accessible by foot. In the past the locals lived in enormous round houses, sometimes accommodating up till 200 people. When the Dutch arrived they demolished the houses, which in their opinion were far from hygienic and so this ancient treasure was lost. But, hidden in the mountains, there is Wea Rebo traditional village that still has these circular and windowless, mythical houses called Mbaru Niang. It has a spectacular setting and there are still four traditional houses left. Again you will be welcomed as honoured guests, with a special ceremony. In this village you will stay the night, sleeping on bamboo mats on the floor. There is plenty of time to see the local way of life. The peacefulness and the beauty of the place are overwhelming.
Day 7 Wea Rebo - Denge
After saying goodbye to your friendly hosts descending begins via a different route offering stunning views. With some luck you can hear and see parrots and whistlers. Some rivers flow crystal clear and you are surrounded by still natural forest. Here it is possible to rest before continuing the last part of the hike to Denge. After a well-deserved lunch a boat leaves to Mules Island. There is a small village and the beaches are white sandy and the waters crystal clear.
Day 8 Denge - Bajawa
After breakfast the journey heads to Bajawa. On the way you can enjoy the magnificent panoramas and stops are made at diverse traditional villages.
Day 9 Bajawa - Ende
At the break of dawn in the early morning you leave from Bajawa to Ende. Here the day is free to spend to power up from an amazing journey and to get ready to leave the next day.
