Little is known about the history of the Sasak, except that Lombok was placed under the authority of the Majapahit, with the leadership of Gajah Mada. The Sasak are in the late 16th century to early 17th century converted to the Islam under the influence of Sunan Giri and the Islamic Makassaresen. The basic Islamic beliefs mixed with Hindu-Buddhist influences formed the Wetu Telu religion. In the early 18th century Lombok was conquered by the Balinese kingdom, Gel Gel. During this domination a large number of Balinese went to Lombok
