HEART OF SUNDA ISLANDS

This 7-day journey gives you an impression of cultural Kupang, a city that is still in development, and the beautiful Alor. Explore the many sights and admire the culture that this trip has to offer. Right into the heart of Sunda.

Day 1 Kalabahi - Paula Ternate
After arrival at the airport there is a transfer to Kalabahi. The journey starts immediately with a trip to explore Alor on a motorbike. First you will visit the hilltop village Bampalola, a strenuous but rewarding one hour hike. This provides breath taking views of the ocean and bay area. In the village the adat house can be found with impressive tribal carvings on its supporting pillars. Then the journey continues to Alor Besar. This is a coastal village where a handwritten Koran from the 17th century can be seen. The proud descendant of the original owner of this impressive book is happy to show it to you. Then after lunch the road heads to the Catholic village of Takapala. The setting of the village is beautiful with sweeping views out to the sea, as if you aren’t living in the 21st century. In the evening a visit will be brought to the orphanage of Ibu Gisela. For the last 20 years, this German woman has provided food and shelter for orphans.

Day 2 Pulau Ternate - Paula Kepa

Awake by a stunning sunrise at dawn and get ready to visit the market. Markets on Alor attract people from all over the island archipelago. The Alor archipelago consists of 15 islands. After the market a boat leaves to the island of Ternate, with a well-known weaving community. In the Islamic village of Uma Pura the whole Kampung will run out to show you their best weavings. Keen walkers can hike to the next Christian village, but it is also possible to reach it by boat. At the end of the day it is possible to snorkel and the final destination is Pulau Kepa, a tiny island with simple but extremely pleasant accommodation. The peaceful atmosphere, clean white beaches and wonderful sea will make you feel as if you are alone in the world.

Day 3 Pulau Kepa

At the beginning of the evening, it is possible to attend the pasar malam at 'kampung solor'. Here you will find various diners offering delicious meals, serving them ‘live’.

Kupang is a regency in East Nusa Tenggara. This regency should not be confused with the city of Kupang a town council that is formed within the same province. Beside the West Timorese mainland Kupang also includes at least seven islands, of which Semau and the Savoe-islands are most known.

Air Nona is a spring that is surrounded by banyan trees in Kupang. Spring water is water that is extracted from natural or underground sources. Spring water is also used as the basis for soft drinks.
