Day 1 Tejakula

Upon arrival in Tejakula there is time to enjoy this traditional village. Walk to the centre of the village, through a small street until the public bathing place ‘permandian kuda’, created especially for horse bathing. Admire their beautiful old architecture that is a witness of the glorious time of Tejakula. The clear spring water flows down endlessly from the mountain, feel the energy of this wonderful bath place.

Day 2 Tejakula - Sembiran
After breakfast the journey continues to Sembiran. Here a visit is brought to the old temple at the historic village. Sembiran is one of the few villages holding the ancient Balinese customs. One of these traditions is the ritual for the dead. In Sembiran, the dead will be buried in a modest ceremony. Eleven days later, the family and close relatives of the deceased will conduct Pamelas Atma (‘to bid the soul farewell’). This ritual will be followed by Ngelumbah and Ngundang rituals to release the soul from worldly attachments and to assist the soul to achieve union with the Almighty. In this village stands the wonderful and amazing Frangipini tree which is more than 100 years old. These trees are known to be raised at cemeteries. At the top of the Sembiran hill it is possible to enjoy stunning views of East Bali. Discover the place where the sarcophagus could be found in ancient times. The evening can be spend as you wish.

The sarcophagus is an archaeological remain from the Perundagian (Megalithic) period, representing a functioning stone case as grave basin at a prehistorical period. The people buried in the sarcophagus are expected to be those who have a high status in society, like the head of the tribe. This collection of sarcophagi is estimated to be between 2000 to 2500 years old.

Day 3 Sembiran - Sudaji
Today the journey continues to Sudaji. En route a stop is made to visit the Batu Pondjok temple. Nearby the sea, bright water wells offer purifying and cleaning water when drinking it or washing in it. Then the journey continues to the Meduwe Karang temple at Kubutambahan. The temple is dedicated to Batara Meduwe Karang (Mother Nature) and provides divine protection of crops and fertile soil. At the entrance there are three rows of images of Ramayana. The temple is walled and decorated with columns. Somewhere on the side of the temple there is and image of a cyclist, perhaps the Dutch artist Woj Nieuwenkamp who explored Bali by bicycle in 1904. At Jagaraga village which is rich in history a visit is made to the Pura Dalem temple. Then further to Sudaji for overnight.

Pura Dalem at Jagaraga was first established in the year 1181. The temple is a silent witness of the historical journey of the Buleleng kingdom that had Singaraja as its capital city. Many historical events are depicted on the temple walls (penyengker pura), like the events that happened during the heroic fights the people of north Bali put up against Dutch troops. The big battles against the Dutch troops broke out on the 16th of April 1848 and were led by Gusti Ketut Jelantik, I Gusti Lanang Sura, I Gusti Ketut Intaran, Jero Jempiring and Jero Tilem. After losing the battle against the Dutch troops over the city of Singaraja, the remaining troops fled to Sukapura which today is called Jagaraga village.

Jaga means to maintain, and raga means meaningful self. Jagaraga stand for ‘keeping watch on yourself’. It eventually came to a ‘puputan’ (fight to the death) that is known as the ‘puputan Jagaraga’ and the Jagaraga temple is dedicated to this puputan.

Day 4 Sudaji
Explore the hidden paradise of north Bali. Visit the Sekumpul waterfall at the highland of Sawan. This is a large, spectacular waterfall of seven layers in a quiet and unspoilt forest. You will need to be reasonably fit and active to get there as the trek to the waterfalls takes a few hours over ground which slopes quite steeply and can be slippery in wet weather. Feel the harmony in the peaceful gorge where the only sounds are birdsong and the splash of the river as it traverses its stony path. In the hills, native hardwoods are interspersed with tall coffee and clove trees, and the fragrant vanilla, used all over the world over in desserts and cakes, climbs up the trunk of small trees that provides foliage for the cows.

Day 5 Sudaji - Munduk
At sunrise you leave Sudaji for the wonderful Munduk. On the way an old library is visited, named Gedong Kirtya and a stop is made at the traditional village Naga Sepaha, containing beautiful painting works on glass, heavenly painting imaging a beautiful daily life of Bali. The day ends in Munduk.

Gedong Kirtya Library was founded in 1928 by the Dutch in what was then their colonial capital of the Lesser Sunda Islands, Singaraja, and named for the Sanskrit word 'to try'. It is in the complex of Sasana Budaya, the old palace of the Buleleng Kingdom. In its collection are lontar manuscripts (written on dried leaves of the lontar palm), prasasti (inscribed on copper plates) and manuscripts on paper in Balinese and Roman characters including documents from the colonial period (1901-1953). Former Bupati of Buleleng Dr Ketut Wirata Sindhu is upgrading the library into a full museum. When completed, the museum will cover the entire Sasana Budaya complex.

Day 6 Munduk

Bali has many sacred places more than most people might think. You will enjoy a unique trekking to the holy Golden Water, a journey through the Garden of Eden at Bali.
